CASA volunteers are changing kids lives everyday...you can too.

What is a CASA

I have been a CASA volunteer for 4 months.  I am trying to give back.  I love children and I just want to help kids and let them know they do have a voice and there are people who care about them.

Volunteering

CASA volunteers are assigned to an abuse or neglect case by a judge. They conduct thorough research on the background of the case, reviewing documents, interviewing everyone involved, including the child. They make reports to the court, recommending what they believe is the best for the child, providing the judge with information that will help him make an informed decision.

CASA volunteers can be instrumental in assuring that a child or family receives services, which the court has ordered -things like substance abuse counseling or special education testing.

During the life of a case, a CASA volunteer monitors the child's situation to make sure he remains safe. CASA volunteers may be the only constant the child knows as she moves through the labyrinth of the child welfare system.

Becoming a CASA

You don't have to be a lawyer or a social worker to qualify; you just have to be an adult willing to stand up for an abused and neglected child. We need dedicated, committed men and women who care about children and are willing to confidently stand up for them and make a difference in their lives.

As a CASA volunteer, you receive official training from professionals in the field to get you familiar with the court and child welfare systems and other important aspects of the case including child deevelopment, interviewing techniques, and cultural competency. You are then qualified to be court appointed by a judge.

You'll be given the tools and personal support you need to aid your search for as much information as possible about a child in order to achieve an objective viewpoint of his/her welfare. You'll review the case to become familiar with the background, gather new data and then develop a report with your recommendation that is shared in the courtroom, verbally or written. It becomes one of the several important pieces a judge considers when making his/her ruling on behalf of the child.
